La Atari 2600 es una videoconsola lanzada al mercado en octubre de 1977 bajo el nombre de Atari VCS (Video Computer System), convirtiéndose en la primera en tener éxito y la tercera que utilizaba cartuchos intercambiables.En 1982, tras el lanzamiento de la Atari 5200, adoptó su nombre final basado en el número de catálogo que la identificaba (CX2600). Esta consola fue un gran éxito y logró que durante los años 1980 "Atari" fuese sinónimo de videojuegos. Durante 1977 hasta 1983, se vendía acompañada con dos joysticks, un par de controladores tipo paddle y el cartucho de juego "Combat", después, a partir de 1982 se vendía sólo con dos joysticks y un cartucho de juego

The Atari 2600 is a video game console released in September 1977 by Atari, Inc. It is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware and ROM cartridges containing game code, a format first used with the Fairchild Channel F game console. This format contrasts with the older model of having non-microprocessor dedicated hardware, which could play only the few games which are physically built in to the unit.
The console was originally sold as the Atari VCS, for Video Computer System. Following the 1982 release of the Atari 5200, the VCS was renamed "Atari 2600", after the unit's Atari part number, CX2600. The 2600 was typically bundled with two joystick controllers, a conjoined pair of paddle controllers, and a cartridge game—initially Combat and later Pac-Man
